Interview Exclusive with Showtek & Ticket Giveaway

Dutch electronic dance music duo, Showtek are headed to Cape Town this weekend and The Socialite is delighted to announce an exclusive interview and ticket giveaway for one lucky reader, check it out…

The Dutch DJ duo consist of brothers Wouter and Sjoerd Janssen, who, since their formation in 2001 have switched and blended styles of EDM, techno, and hardstyle and worked with artists as prolific and varied as Tiësto and Chris Brown.

Getting to Know Showtek:

1.      What makes a popular track? Is it all about pushing the envelope or making people dance?

It’s a bit of both, being innovative and experimenting with new sounds is important but obviously a track needs to be dance-able too!

2.      What kind of sound are you feeling these days?

We like to stick to our classic sound, but once in a while it’s fun to try something new. Like we did with ’90’s By Nature’, that song had a more house-y sound while most of our other tracks are EDM. Like we said, it’s important to experiment and innovate, but it’s also important that people hear whether it’s a track made by us.

3.      How important is it for a DJ to get a residency?

We wouldn’t say it’s that important to get a residency once you’re name is out there, but before that, it can make a huge difference. If you’ve got a residency you have a platform on which you can showcase yourself and your music every week or month and that can be very important.

4.      You’ve toured a lot; which city has the most exciting music scene?

Wow, this is really difficult. There’s so many great scenes all over the world. But one of the most exciting ones is probably Las Vegas, there’s so much to offer in that city!

5.    When you play over in Europe, do they respond differently to the music you play or is it the same everywhere you play?

It’s definitely different. We might have a huge hit in Asia while in Europe people think it’s okay. There’s really no way to say that one track is received the same way all over the world, although it does happen sometimes when it’s a real big hit.

6.    Being completely honest, what was the first record (or cassette or cd) you bought?

Haha probably something you won’t expect but my (Wouter) first album was a Michael Jackson album and Sjoerd’s was from Snoop Dogg.

7.    Who do you predict will be big come 2015?

There’s so many awesome talent out there right now! We think a lot of the Spinnin’ Records guys are going to be big, Oliver Heldens, Jay Hardway but also TV Noise is working very hard, so watch out for them!
