Locnville Debuts James Dean

SA’s electro hop musos Locnville featuring twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin return to The Socialite this week where we catch up with them and find out more about their latest track James Dean, check it out…

The Cape Town duo have been hard at work in studio working on their latest album and have recently returned home after a trip to the states. But was it all work and no play for the local musos?

“It was a fantastic trip, it was a bit more work than I thought it would be, but there was still enough play. We’re in the process of doing some cool things that don’t even necessarily have anything to do with our music, but it all ties in to the same project” says Brian.

Andrew went on to say “You can look forward to quite a bit of new sound on the next album. We’ve been speaking a lot about C.L.A.P! lately and a lot of people have been asking if it’s a new album, and I suppose it is and it isn’t at the same time. We don’t want to focus too much on an album right now, we’re really just having fun making music again that we really feel, with no sort of obligation, so it’s raw and honest sounding. So basically C.L.A.P! is a production project we’ve taken on which hopefully soon enough will compile an album of some real bangers” he says.

Locnville recently released a teaser of their new track titled James Dean and Andrew spoke to us about how the movie icon came to be the title of their latest track and the reasons behind it…

My most clear memory of James Dean is a big canvas poster my parents had on the wall growing up, it was a shot of him from the movie Giant. I also always loved the whole concept of Rebel Without A Cause, so when I came up with that beat, it’s all I could really imagine. I’ve been wanting to do a ‘James Dean’ track for a while now, I’m really happy with the feedback it’s been getting! We basically just released it to test the waters a bit but we’re now going ahead with full video production and everything else. I’m glad people feel the track like I do, because it’s different but got a real smooth beat” he says.

The lyrics were both from Andrew and Brian with Andrew having come up with the beat and the idea of the pitched down voice saying ‘James Dean’ but it was a very collaborative effort on a whole. “It was an easy write, we sort of free styled to the beat and wrote down what was fresh on our minds, so it sounds natural and not too over thought” says Andrew.

“We’re looking forrward to shooting a music video for it later this month and it’s gonna be pretty wild, we should have some cars spinning out in deserts and fun things like that!” says Brian.

In the meantime, you can catch Locnville performing in Durban on the 27th of May at the Chris Saunders as well as various other gigs around Cape Town, Jozi and even Jeffrey’s Bay as well as at the Top Gear 2012 Festival.
