This weekend sees Street Scene Tours collaborate with the Ethekwini Municipality to bring you the 2nd annual Interpret Durban event. The Socialite finds out more…
This year the event takes place at the Durban City Hall and invites creatives to enter submissions for video, tee shirt designs as well as photographs incorporating this year’s theme. The top ten finalists’ tees and photography prints will be available to purchase or order on the evening. Umthombo art surf boards will be auctioned on the evening with all proceeds from the auction benefitting Umthombo Street Children.
Video installations, live art, fashion shows, food and music will provide the backdrop to a collaboration that will energise the city centre and showcase its potential as a vibrant art precinct. Acts confirmed are BLK JKS, The City Bowl Mizers, The La Els, The Meditators, Seake, Coco Loco, The Wilderness Act and more.
The brief for submissions is simple. Creatives are challenged to share their interpretation of Durban, focused around 3 words: Rediscover. Reconnect. Reveal.
The closing date for submissions is September 19th at 5pm. A detailed breakdown of requirements and general info can be found at www.streetscenetours.co.za.
The event itself will take place at City Hall on the evening of the 23rd September where the top 10 creations in the three categories will be on display. The judges will cast their votes on the night of the event to determine who they believe should walk away with the prizes. These prizes, valued at more than R30 000, have been provided by some of Durban’s best businesses, organisations and establishments, and are in themselves proudly Durban.
Once the winners have been announced, the celebration kicks off with top live bands and DJs taking over the proceedings and making it a night to remember. “The idea was always to celebrate our city,” says Richard Powell of Street Scene Tours, “Our work is based around showcasing our city, and this event was designed to showcase our cities talent and people. We are so excited to see what Durban creates”.
Presale tickets for the event will be available for R50 from Keys On Florida (170 Florida Road) as well as Computicket, whilst tickets at the door will be R70 on the night.
