Trend Spotting with Melissa Allen

Recognizing the need for fresh and unusual clothing collections and armed with a dream, Miss Molly Fashions was born. The Socialite paid a visit to owner and stylish fashionista Melissa Allen to  find out her top five trends for 2010:

Well, we know for sure that the Military trend is back in full force! We have seen this trend evolve into many new variations over the seasons but I really love how local designers have interpreted this trend in their own way this year. It ranges from the hectic structured shoulders, to the amazingly embellished epaulettes and to the extreme skinny leather pants.  This has to be one of my favourite trends at the moment.

Florals are still going strong and I am sure they will be another great trend for Spring 2010. I have really warmed up to the layering and mixing and matching of the larger floral prints, teamed with the smaller floral prints and vice versa. H&M portrayed this beautifully in their garden collection. The  collection  featured eco friendly fabrics – feminine chiffon dresses with colorful garden prints, pinafore dresses with romantic roses and smock dresses in an ethnic floral pattern. The floral trend is a great excuse to indulge in your inner femininity.

We have seen a lot of the Nautical trend coming back this year and I am particularly drawn to this because it is a really easy yet elegant look to wear. A classic blue and white or black and white stripe top can be worn with just about any bottom. Even a nautical-styled dress worn on its own or paired with a cute cardigan can look superb.  The sailor look has inspired fashion for ages  and it even had a hand in the creation of Coco Chanel’s chic sportswear range in the 20’s. Think sailor stripes, deck pants and rope accents.

Sheer fabrics have been seen on many a runway this season and I think most of us may decide to adopt this trend sparingly. Sheer fabrics have been used in a multitude of ways ranging from  tight sheer pieces, layers and much sought after delicate, feminine draping. Sheer fabrics have the power to sizzle even the most conservative styles. The alluring transparent look is good enough to look cool as well as hot but I think elegance is the key to wearing the sheer trend this year.

Mixed prints have also been a big hit and this season any print goes. Most people may find this a challenging trend to pull off successfully, but I think with the right prints and colors you can look fabulous. Mix and match your most colorful pieces in your wardrobe for a bold yet stylish look. However I think that it is important to remember keep one of your prints simple as to not look clownish. I would stay away from the mixing of two animal prints together, this for me is a big no no!
