The month of May has arrived, so you know it’s time for the annual Met Gala, Here’s everything you need to know…
Fashion’s biggest night is filled with A-list stars, haut couture and a touch of drama. It’s a night that sees some of the biggest names in Hollywood walk the red carpet and has been dubbed the “Super Bowl of Fashion”. Nothing comes close to the annual Met Gala in New York, which is held on the first Spring Monday night in May each year.
The night aims to raise money for the Costume Institute (a.k.a. the fashion department), the only one of the Met’s curatorial departments that has to fund itself. This year tickets are $30,000 apiece and tables are around $275,000. The black-tie extravaganza is sponsored by Apple this year so all the money raised from ticket sales goes to the Costume Institute. Last year, more than $12.5 million was raised.
Following on from the successful theme last year, this year will see ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’ as the Met Gala’s 2016 theme – fusing that of machine-made and mad-made fashion.
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is the event’s official chair and host once again this year and has had an integral part in selecting the final guest list. Taylor Swift is set to be this year’s honorary chair. Anna’s co-hosts include Idris Elba and Apple’s chief design officer Jonathan Ive. Honorary chairs also include Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada.
The celeb filled night is set to include appearances by Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Calvin Harris, Kylie Jenner, Beyonce, Jay Z, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Alicia Vikander and Jennifer Lawrence.
