What does it mean for the city of Durban and its people?
New, improved, world-class sports facilities can be used as part of the sustainable sports development programmes that aim to improve the lives of underprivileged children and adults. By hosting the Games, public infrastructure development will be fast-tracked, improving local facilities in general. Development for the Games synchronizes with the City’s urban regeneration plans. The Games’ Village will be converted into gap housing post Games. Young people will be empowered with specialist skills and knowledge and as seen with previous major sporting events, social cohesion and unity improves on a huge scale.
In total, international visitors are expected to contribute up to R12 Billion in direct expenditure.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games is expected to deliver up to R20 Billion in output to the economy, translating into an additional R11 billion GDP growth.
