The bid is a fully integrated part of Durban’s strategic intention to build the profile of the city as a world-class sports destination and to generate significant economic benefits for the region.
Durban 2022 will help share the city’s inspiring story and invite new people to experience the country in the best possible way. Hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games would be incredibly beneficial and inspiring.
What does it mean for the city of Durban and its people?
New, improved, world-class sports facilities can be used as part of the sustainable sports development programmes that aim to improve the lives of underprivileged children and adults. The Games’ Village will be converted into gap housing post Games. Young people will be empowered with specialist skills and knowledge and as seen with previous major sporting events, social cohesion and unity improves on a huge scale.
In total, international visitors are expected to contribute up to R12 Billion in direct expenditure.
