UK double-platinum selling artist, George Ezra, will be joined on stage by some of our best local acts during his upcoming tour this weekend and he is joined by none other than Beatenberg. We caught up with band member Rob to find out more, check it out…
Beatenberg shot to prominence when their collaboration with DJ Clock, Pluto (Remember You), grew to become the biggest smash hit of summer 2014 in Southern Africa and broke the record for most weeks at #1 on radio with 19 weeks on the top spot.
1. What elements make for a successful musical partnership in a band?
Well it’s much like conventional musical harmony. There needs to be a solid relationship between the three parts. The root, the third and the fifth are the foundation of your ordinary triadic chord. Beatenberg is like that: a harmony of parts. In more prosaic terms: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
2. What do you enjoy most about playing in front of a live audience?
Without a doubt – shredding, connecting with fans and making funny or mysterious faces. I also like watching people dance and even dancing ourselves.
3. What makes a popular track in your opinion? Is it all about pushing the envelope or simply making people want to dance?
People want to dance: it’s an ancient, deep, instinctual kind of thing. So that’s a good start. Pushing the envelope is also an important factor in both the commercial and underground music spaces.
4. What does South Africa offer that you can’t hear or experience in any other place in the world?
South Africa has by far the best house music in the world. It’s nice to see it getting heard around the world like it should. Black Coffee (on a global tour right now) is the best ambassador we could possibly ask for in representing the sophistication and intensity of South African music and musical possibilities.
5. What can people look forward to hearing at your performances when you perform at #GeorgeEzraSA later this month?
Well they can look forward to hearing their favourite Beatenberg tracks: we have a fairly high success rate of satisfying audiences.
