It’s All About the VDJ

We bring you coverage of the Vodacom Durban July with everything from pre-parties to sneak peeks into VIP marquees to high fashion and celebrities for Durban’s greatest horseracing event of the year, check it out…

This year marked seven years in celebration as Gateway Theatre of Shopping has hosted the highly anticipated Vodacom Durban July Preview Fashion Show and Concert the night before Race Day. This year tapped into the formal style expected from an exclusive dinner on a cruise liner at the Captain’s Table, from which the race day theme was derived. The centre was abuzz with members of the media, partygoers and hundreds of fashionistas sporting outfits inspired by the cruise couture fashion theme.

The show celebrated race day fashion by featuring the Fashion Challenge finalists and Invited Designers showstopper collections.  The designers for this year’s Invited Designer Showcase were Craig Jacobs (Fundudzi), Terrence Bray, Colleen Eitzen, Brenda Quin (Diva), Sibu Msimang, Dale McCarthy & Jane Wolff (McCarthy & Wolff Designs), Hangwani Nengovhela (Rubicon) and Haroun Hansrot. The show also included Gateway stores Kathrin Kidger, Forever New, Guess, Edgars (with brands River Island and Express), showcasing their race day theme interpretations.

The night played host to world class fashion and entertainment and the concert featured local performers Goodluck, Shortstraw, Ryan the DJ and Protoculture.

Power King Wins 2015 Vodacom Durban July

Power King, ridden by jockey Stuart Randolph swept to victory in front of a crowd of 55 000 in the R3.5 million title race, and over R100 million was expected to be paid out in winning bets.

The Vodacom Durban July itself contributes over R220 million in direct spend into the local economy, most of which emanates from the Gauteng visitors who drive down for the weekend, making up more than half of the 55 000 strong crowd at Greyville Racecourse, and contributing over R150 million just through transport, accommodation, tickets, entertainment, restaurants and clothing for the event.

Waves of seaside colours anchored at the race course with ensembles and intricate fascinators inspired by the ocean, captains and sunsets. Fashions of the 1920’s steered some outfits while other outfits opted for a more daring and theatrical approach.

Tens of thousands of punters and fashionistas alike embraced the festivities of the most prestigious horse racing event on the continent, suiting up and splashing out for the 2015 Vodacom Durban July. We were honoured to be hosted by Sibaya Casino and Sun International as well as have a sneak peek into the Deloitte corporate marquee which had Events Styling add a touch of signature glam through the talents of owner Marge B.

Yet again the highly anticipated horseracing event lived up to the excitement as the glitz and glamour of the day unfolded in the array of fashion competitions, entertainment and on-track action paved the way for a day of celebration.
