South Africa Welcomes X Factor to the Small Screen

The world’s biggest and most successful singing competition The X Factor is coming to South African TV screens from September 2014. The Socialite finds out more, check it out…

The show will be broadcast on SABC 1 and will see the winner walk away with a recording contract with Sony Music and R300 000 in prize money at the grand finale in Durban come December the 13th.

The hit format created by Simon Cowell has produced stars from Leona Lewis, James Arthur to one of the biggest bands in the world right now, 1 Direction.

With three judges and host set to be announced in early June, online auditions for The X Factor have opened; with national location auditions starting from 7 June in Durban before moving to Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Polokwane, Johannesburg, Nelspruit and Pietermaritzburg.

Auditions are open to anyone who is over 18 and who is either singing solo or as part of a group. No bands are allowed and groups must have two or more singers.  And this is where The X Factor differs from other reality shows; each judge is assigned a category to mentor and then they are effectively competing against each other to see who can champion a star with the X factor.

The X Factor South Africa will be broadcast over 15 weeks – with seven pre-recorded shows covering all the drama of the auditions, boot camp and home visits and eight live gala shows from Durban.

“The X Factor has set the benchmark in finding worldwide superstars over the years. The decision of SABC1 presenting this show is informed by the insight that our viewers and South Africans at large have an overwhelming goal to showcase their extraordinary talents for their aspiration to mega-stardom. SABC1 is therefore a natural home for “The X Factor” South Africa, reaffirming once again that SABC1 is the entertainment authority within the TV landscape. So if you know that you have that indefinable something of superstar quality, now is your chance to show SA what you’ve got,” said Zandile Nkonyeni – Head of PR: SABC TV Channels.”
