A day of racing, music and fashion came together in a grand finale over the weekend with the Ladbrokes Gold Cup which took place at Greyville Race Course. The Socialite was there to find out more…
The day saw some of SA’s finest horses compete over a distance of 3200m for a prize to the tune of R1 million. As the toughest marathon horseracing event, it demands the utmost from the big-chested stayers as they make their way around Greyville Racecourse before calling on all the stoutness of their hearts to find an extra kick for the final 400 metre battle to the line.
Dominant colours on the day included red, royal blue and grey and retro blazers, multi-layered lace dresses and stylish hats were this year’s favourite fashion accessories.
It was In Writing with jockey Felix Coetzee who truly stole the show though crossing the finishing line to beat Princess of Light. Last year’s winner Aslan competed along with seasoned stayers Ilsanpietro, Gorongosa, Blake and Kolkata.
The event, billed as “Race like a Rock Star”, saw local rock band Shadow Club as the headline act and the country’s finest DJs, musicians, and dancers keeping the crowd entertained throughout the day.
Also on the bill were Durban boys Catlike Thieves as well as Liam Magner and Jane Baillie of Veranda Panda, Brass Rock, Drumkit Majola and BBoy Stretch & BBoy Law.
