In today’s edition we look at two prolific South African designers came together to create a visual masterpiece
Cape Town, March 2011, Ida Elsje designed a collection of headpieces for David West’s Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection entitled ‘What Was Once New Is Old?’
Elsje drew inspiration from a painting by Austrian Symbolist artist Gustav Klimt. West felt the artist’s work best represented the shapes he desired for ornamental headpieces. Elsje worked with chased copper and incorporated rivets to give the pieces movement and allow them to be adjusted. One of the headpiece styles was converted into a necklace using a primitive belt clasp.
