Greyville Racecourse was transformed into a floral fiesta on Saturday as SA’s greatest horseracing event of the year took place in Durban. Fashionistas and horse racing enthusiasts alike partied in style and The Socialite was there to bring you behind the scenes raceday coverage…
Hospitality suites, trackside picnic sites and the legendary infield Marquee Village was packed with spirited fashionistas, socialites and punters at the Greyville Racecourse as the Vodacom Durban July day had finally arrived.
Bold patterns, feminine ruffles and floral prints marked the interpretations of the “It’s a Blooming Great Day” raceday theme and truly inspired the Fashion Challenge and Young Designers Award winners to go all out. Young hopefuls showcased their creations with some of Durban’s familiar trendsetters in a fashion extravaganza, which has now marked its place on the international fashion scene.
With garments ranging from chic and elegant to playful and outrageous through to the totally unconventional – South Africa’s prime fashion and social event did not disappoint.

Our first stop was to the DDK Events’ marquee where raceday guests were treated to complimentary drinks and authentic Indian cuisine and entertainment by the Pixie Bennett Band. The marquee’s exquisite decor made guests feel as if they had stepped onto a Bollywood Film set and it was no surprise that DDK Events later walked away with the award for “Best Hospitality Facility” 2010.
Perhaps fashion was the true winner on race day as it wasn’t only the designers and models that showed off their style, but celebrities and visitors enjoyed indulging in designer creations and three-piece suits to mark the occasion. The Socialite popped in to the Vodacom VIP Paddock where Miss SA Nicole Flint, 5fm’s K.B. Ngakane and the gorgeous Poppy Ntshongwana, Danny K and his girlfriend Lisa, Terence Pillay, Zuraida Jardine and local hottie Ryk Neethling were seen enjoying the fashions and races of the day.

Next stop was to the Palm Grove Village marquee where guests celebrated the day’s unsuspecting wins and losses in style with Taco Zulu and Vida e Caffe on hand and live entertainment. Live performances for the day included some of SA’s top acts with the likes of Flash Republic, Ready D, Spitmunky, DJ Coco Loco, Funky G, Garuni and Hairlip – Durban’s own home-grown 80’s cover band. A blooming great way to celebrate an eventful day and toast to what has become the most celebrated horseracing event on the social calendar to date.
