Sunday night. Not your quintessential party night nor the night one expects live bands performing in a coyote-style bar with lumo face paint added to the mix. Enter Café Vacca Matta and the boys of Spitmunky however, and you’re too swept away by the beat production and live performances by the electro hip-hop rap trio to notice. Chia Kougianos went along to find out more…
It is true what they say. Café Vacca Matta situated at the Suncoast Casino, is the mother ship of North Beach. Hosting weekly drum and bass sessions, delectable cocktails, fashion shows and live music it’s a mighty force to be reckoned with. The coyote-style bar has done everything from having bands like Napalma perform, to deejays like Niskerone and Durban’s Coco Loco on the decks, to local beauty pageants and corporate gigs. Spitmunky was next on the club’s gig line-up and saw the first in a series of Lumo Parties to be held at the Sunday Drum n Bass Sessions, called Glow.
No strangers to the SA music scene, Spitmunky’s signature mix of live beats, bass lines and explosive hip hop brought the bounce back to the UV-lit dance floor and left the audience feeling like the weekend had just begun.
The band performed with its original members, which includes master of the spoken word, Creamy Ewok Baggends, the King of Filth himself Liam Magner aka Veranda Panda and the electro-fused beats of Jacobus Van Heerden aka Benson 3000. Joining in the mix, were Georgios Kretsos aka DJ Nightvision, who put his own unique spin on things along with durban performer Victor Samsanov on violin, and Ewok’s lovely lady Karen Logan, who provided live visuals adding a hot new dimension to their performance.
Delectable beats cut through the dance floor and was served hot in true Spitmunk style seeing Sunday night turned on its little head. Heynolukka.
